The abscess loop knife is drawn toward the suspect area in light, controlled passes to pare thin layers of sole and follow an abscess tract. Keep the blade sharp; a dull loop knife needs force, and force removes too much. Cut away from your body and hand, and stop at the first sign of the tract opening; drainage, not excavation, is the goal.
